When a decision is taken to begin counselling the first step is a preliminary meeting to discuss the work to be done together. This gives the client an opportunity to meet the counsellor, to ask any questions they may have and, if they feel ready at that time, to decide what the initial working agreement will be. Some clients prefer to begin with short-term work whilst others know that they will wish to work in some depth over a longer period.
Short-term counselling generally means 4 - 8 sessions. This is especially useful if the client has a particular issue to work with.
Longer term counselling, generally 10 - 20 sessions or more, allows greater opportunity to explore in depth the influences which impact on emotional and physical well-being.
In keeping with person-centred thinking, it is ultimately up to the client to decide when and for how long they wish to work.
Fees for counselling are charged on a sliding scale in relation to the income of the client. It is hoped that no-one will be turned away simply because of shortage of funds.
Hourly sessions may be expected to cost between £40 and £45. For those on a very restricted income it may be possible to apply for extra assistance with fees This can be discussed at the intial interview which costs
£30 and takes about 45 minutes.
