Big Brother
Home Up A Time and Place for us...

As well as dispensing wisdom here, magnificat is also active on message boards, such as Channel 4 Reach 4 Forum. It's a bit common mixing verbally with the unwashed hordes, but you do get a much bigger readership.

The following is a dialogue with "Barbara" about the Big Brother website. I should point out that this site has been causing enormous grief to people attempting to use it. On the Channel 4 forum there are at present 262 posts about it, and no less than 258 of those are critical. Never, ever has magnificat seen such a degree of unanimity.

We join Barbara as she introduces a new point...

I managed to register for the Club and also to vote in the Popularity option, however I am puzzled because I have just read on the Big Brother site that you have to download special software in order to vote for someone to be evicted, yet I could not find any other mention of this requirement. Can someone please enlighten me?

magnificat
Barbara - why do you want to vote for someone to be evicted? Don't you think that is a bit cruel? How would you like it if someone voted to evict you?

Just because someone sets up a game doesn't mean people have to take part in it you know. I think it's a dreadful thing, and appeals to people's lowest instincts.

Barbara
Sorry, I thought that was the whole idea of the exercise. Just to show that I am a bit of a rebel, after reading, somewhere, that Sada was the one everyone didn't like, I voted for Sada in the popularity poll, but now I am not so sure it was accepted.

magnificat
Well, not exactly, Barbara. The point of the exercise is to make money for various companies. Pure and simple. By "doing as you're told", and voting like that, you are assisting them in their profit-making.

Anybody else agree, or am I once again crying in the wind? It's not easy being different...

Barbara
That's interesting. How do they make money? Who pays them?

magnificat
Hi Barbara! Big Brother is funded by the people who buy a bottle of Southern Comfort that they might not otherwise have done. (You'll notice the website is dotted with ads, and of course if the TV show attracts the viewers they hope, then up shoots the revenue from the ads in the breaks.)

The sole purpose of TV is to shift product. And, sadly, that is the way the www is rapidly going also. It seems the power of money is unstoppable.

Well, not quite. If no-one at all bought Southern Comfort for the duration of the show, no matter how badly they wanted one, this would put a fascinating hiccup into the glitzy chintzy world of the advertisers.

Oh dear. This post won't survive long. Much too dangerous...

Barbara
Hi Magnificat.
Thanks for explaining the commercial side of things. You will be glad to know I have never bought a bottle of Southern Comfort.

More help please. I know I am a pest, and very dim, but I haven't seen Big Brother on television - I think I noticed a 5 minute broadcast mentioned in the Radio Times magazine but it clashed with something else I liked so I didn't watch.

Hi again Barbara. The first show was last Tuesday, for about an hour. I didn't watch much of it, as the people weren't very interesting. I'll possibly give it another bash to see how it progresses.

I also saw some of the webcam stuff, where the women made the breakfast while men lounged about in towels. (Sound familiar?)

Plus there's really nothing wrong with Southern Comfort - it's quite tasty!! I'm just a subversive consumer. The film How to Get Ahead in Advertising, starring Richard E Grant is very funny.

You seem very nice, btw :)

Barbara
Many thanks.
I'm not a Richard E Grant fan, but I will look out for that film - with 3 and 2 halves film channels I should be able to see it sometime in the near future.

And here out interchange ends, for now at least...
